Kolkata, Sep 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Sumit Roy, the Personal Assistant to Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, who was arrested by the sleuths of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police in connection with an alleged multi-crore land-grabbing case in Salboni of West Midnapore district was on Friday remanded to eight days of CID custody by a district court in the same district.
The CID sleuths arrested Roy from Abhishek Banerjee's residence at Kalighat Road in Kolkata on Thursday afternoon, nearly an hour after a division bench of the Supreme Court in the same morning cancelled his interim protection from coercive police action, including arrest in the matter.
On Friday morning, the CID officers first took Roy to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital in South Kolkata for medical checkup and then took him to West Midnapore and presented him at a district court there.
At the end of the hearing, the district court remanded him to eight days of CID custody, the public prosecutor in the matter Nazim Habib told media persons.
"There are multiple charges against Sumit Roy. In addition, a petition was filed regarding his physical condition. Along with this, a petition has also been filed to allow their advocates during interrogation. In that case, they have been asked to give the names of two advocates. After that, the court will examine whether it would be allowed or not. No bail application has been filed by them," Habib said.
Roy is the principal accused in the Salboni land scam case. His anticipatory bail plea was earlier rejected by the Calcutta High Court, following which he moved the Supreme Court seeking relief.
The matter was heard on Thursday by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Venkata Subba Rao Mohana.
With the withdrawal of interim protection, investigators faced no legal impediment in proceeding with the arrest.
The apex court bench said that, despite being given an opportunity, Sumit Roy did not properly cooperate in the process of investigation.
The arrest comes at a time when Abhishek Banerjee is abroad for ophthalmic treatment.
